Prong's Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Colaba, India
Prong's Lighthouse is a white stone structure standing in Colaba with a slender cylindrical shaft and double balcony beneath the lantern chamber at its top. The building reaches approximately 41 meters and displays three horizontal color bands in red, white, and black that are visible from a distance.
British authorities built this lighthouse in 1875 to replace an earlier structure at Colaba Point following numerous shipwrecks in Mumbai Harbor. The new facility became an important navigation marker for vessels entering the port.
The Grade-I heritage structure displays three horizontal bands in red, white, and black colors, marking the entrance to Mumbai Harbor.
The lighthouse operates around the clock, emitting white light flashes every ten seconds to guide ships up to about 23 nautical miles away. Access is restricted because the facility sits within military territory and requires special authorization for entry.
The facility is staffed by permanent operators who maintain the light and navigation systems on site. This continuous presence allows it to reliably perform its essential role in guiding maritime traffic.
