Prong's Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Colaba, India
Prong's Lighthouse is a white stone tower in Colaba, Mumbai, with a slender cylindrical shaft, a double balcony, and a lantern chamber at the top. Three horizontal bands in red, white, and black run around the shaft, making it recognizable from a distance at sea.
British authorities built this lighthouse in 1875 to replace an older structure at Colaba Point, after a series of shipwrecks near Mumbai Harbor. Over time it was officially listed as a Grade I heritage structure.
The lighthouse marks the entrance to Mumbai Harbor and is recognized by its three horizontal bands in red, white, and black. For generations, sailors have used it as a familiar reference point when approaching the port.
The lighthouse stands within a military area, so entry requires special authorization and is not open to general visitors. It is best seen from the water or from the surrounding Colaba shoreline.
Unlike most modern lighthouses, this one is permanently staffed by operators who live and work on site around the clock. This kind of continuous human presence has become rare as most lighthouses around the world have been automated.
