Kolkata Eye, Unbuilt Ferris wheel near Hooghly River, Kolkata, India.
Kolkata Eye is a planned but never built observation wheel intended to stand along the Hooghly River in Kolkata, India. The design called for passenger capsules that would carry visitors high enough to look out over the city and the waterfront.
The project was announced in 2011 as a way to give Kolkata a new landmark along the river. Despite planning efforts and international involvement, construction never started and the project was eventually abandoned.
The project's name was changed for legal reasons because it resembled the name of an international entertainment company. The wheel was later referred to as Kolkata Giant Wheel in official communications.
Since the structure was never built, there is nothing to see at the site itself. The riverbank along the Hooghly is open to walk and gives a good sense of where the project would have stood.
The wheel was designed with 30 rotating capsules, yet not a single brick was ever laid at the site. The project lingered in planning for years without ever moving to the construction phase.
