Regional Railway Museum, Railway museum in Howrah, India
The Regional Railway Museum in Howrah is a railway museum near Howrah Station that displays steam locomotives, electric locomotives, and handcrafted models of tracks and signals. The exhibition also covers historical drawings, documents, and pieces of railway equipment from different periods.
The museum opened in 2006 as the first of its kind in Eastern India, built around a collection tied to the East Indian Railway Company. That company laid the groundwork for rail travel across the region during the 19th century.
Old photographs and objects on display show how railways shaped daily life in the region from the 19th century onward. The collection gives a sense of how closely the people of Howrah lived alongside the trains.
The museum is closed on Mondays and sits close to Howrah Station, making it easy to reach on foot from the main platforms. Allow enough time to visit both the indoor galleries and the outdoor vehicles, as the grounds cover a fair amount of space.
A toy train runs through the garden on the museum grounds, offering a ride that most visitors do not expect to find at a railway museum. There is also a miniature replica of Howrah Station, built to scale and detailed enough to be worth a close look.
