Molai forest, Forest sanctuary in Majuli, India.

The Molai forest extends across 550 hectares on a sandbar of the Brahmaputra River, containing thousands of trees and bamboo plantations.

In 1979, sixteen-year-old Jadav Payeng initiated the transformation of a barren sandbar into a forest by planting bamboo seedlings near Kokilamukh.

The forest demonstrates the indigenous Mising tribe practices of environmental stewardship through the dedication of Jadav Payeng to forest cultivation.

The forest accommodates Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros, deer, monkeys, and numerous bird species, with annual visits from elephant herds lasting six months.

Forest department officials discovered this hidden ecosystem in 2008 while tracking elephants, revealing the results of three decades of solitary conservation work.
