Najafgarh drain bird sanctuary

The Najafgarh drain bird sanctuary extends along several kilometers of waterways, providing habitats for numerous local and migratory waterbird species in Delhi.

Before the 1960s drainage projects, the area contained a 300-square-kilometer lake that served as a critical stopover for Siberian Cranes during migration periods.

Local naturalists conducted extensive studies between 1986 and 1989, leading to the recognition and protection of this vital wildlife habitat in Delhi.

The sanctuary remains accessible through an inspection road running parallel to the drain, with the nearest metro station located at Dwarka Sector 21.

The Delhi Government planted 12,000 trees in 2008 to enhance the sanctuary environment, creating additional shelter and nesting spaces for diverse bird populations.
