Vardhangad Fort, Military fort in Satara district, India.
Vardhangad Fort is a stone fort rising roughly 900 feet above the surrounding plain on a round-topped hill situated between Koregaon and Khatav in the Satara district. The structure includes preserved walls, bastions, and buildings spread across the hilltop, with the Vardhinidevi temple anchoring the central area.
Construction of the fort was ordered by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1673 and completed in 1674 as a defensive post for his eastern border. The site remained a significant military position during the power struggles that shaped the region over the following centuries.
The temple of Vardhinidevi sits within the fort grounds and draws local worshippers, especially during the annual autumn festival. Visitors can observe traditional ceremonies and see how the space serves as a spiritual gathering place for the surrounding communities.
The climb to the fort is steep and takes roughly one to two hours, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. The main approach starts from the Satara-Pandharpur road and ascends the southern slope, though several alternate routes exist for those seeking different perspectives.
The fort contains a tunnel network hidden beneath stones and vegetation that reportedly connects to a neighboring fortress. These underground passages are mostly inaccessible today but reveal the strategic thinking behind secret communication routes between defensive positions.
