Machilipatnam Port, Commercial port in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India
Machilipatnam Port is a commercial port on the Bay of Bengal coast in Andhra Pradesh, India. It has several cargo berths and handles goods such as rice, textiles, and pharmaceuticals moving in and out of the region.
This port has been a trading point for centuries, first linking the region with merchants from the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Dutch, British, and French traders later established their own posts here, each shaping the flow of commerce through the harbor.
Machilipatnam was long known as Masulipatnam, and locals still use both names interchangeably in conversation. The port sits in a region where Kalamkari cotton fabric painting remains an active craft tradition, and goods from this trade have historically passed through these docks.
This is an active commercial facility, and access to certain areas is restricted for safety reasons. Visiting in the early morning gives a better sense of the port's activity, as loading and unloading typically happens at that time.
Although this port has been in use for centuries, it is currently undergoing a transformation into a deep-water port able to receive much larger vessels. This makes it one of the few ports on India's east coast combining such an old trading past with ongoing infrastructure works.
