Akbari Fort & Museum

Akbari Fort & Museum, Historical museum in Ajmer, India

Akbari Fort and Museum is a military fortress in Ajmer with octagonal bastions at each corner that houses several collections. Inside, visitors can see weapons, traditional textiles, and Mughal-era objects displayed across multiple exhibition halls.

Emperor Akbar ordered the construction of this fortress in 1570 and initially used it for military purposes in the city. Over time, the structure was transformed into a residential complex that became integrated into the urban center of Ajmer.

The museum displays objects from different periods of the region, including ancient pottery and stone sculptures that offer insights into local traditions. Visitors can see artistic styles that were practiced in Ajmer across centuries.

Entry to the site is through the main gate where tickets are sold and the entrance is clearly marked. It is wise to expect different opening hours depending on the season and plan accordingly.

At a red sandstone window above the main entrance, a notable meeting took place in 1615 when Thomas Roe of the East India Company was received by the emperor. This historical event marked an important moment of early trade exchange between Europe and the region.
