Dhanushkodi Beach, Coastal beach at southern tip of Rameswaram, India.
Dhanushkodi Beach is a coastal stretch at the southern tip of Rameswaram where the Bay of Bengal meets the Gulf of Mannar. The shore displays distinct water patterns and currents created by these two bodies of water coming together.
A severe cyclone in 1964 transformed this once-populated area into abandoned terrain. The disaster left behind ruins of the former settlement that remain visible today.
The name Dhanushkodi means 'end of bow' and refers to the Ramayana epic, where Rama's army built a bridge to Lanka. Visitors can still feel this mythological connection through the landscape and stories told by local guides.
Accessing this location requires a special permit and a four-wheel drive vehicle due to difficult road conditions. The best time to visit is between November and March when weather conditions are more favorable.
The beach serves as a natural gathering spot for various bird species, especially during winter months. Flamingos and gulls regularly use the area as a stopping point during their migrations.
