Purba Bardhaman district, Administrative district in West Bengal, India
Purba Bardhaman is an administrative district within Burdwan division in West Bengal, covering fertile lowlands along the Damodar River. The district includes subdivisions such as Bardhaman Sadar North, Bardhaman Sadar South, Kalna, and Katwa, each with its own urban and rural areas.
The district was created in 2017 through the division of the former Bardhaman district, retaining its eastern portions including the capital. The region passed through Mughal governance, British colonial administration, and later West Bengal state government.
Bengali language dominates the district's communication patterns, with over 92 percent of residents using it as their primary means of expression.
Travelers reach the region through major rail lines connecting Bardhaman to Kolkata and other larger cities, while highways provide access to smaller towns and villages. The district is accessible throughout the year, though monsoon months from June to September can bring heavy rainfall.
Archaeologists found traces of Mesolithic settlements in the Ajay valley, particularly at Pandu Rajar Dhibi, dating to around 5000 BCE. These excavations show that people practiced farming and lived in communities here long before the historical period.
