Nallambal Lake, body of water
Nallambal Lake is a man-made reservoir in the village of Nallambal near the town of Thirunallar in Karaikal district, Puducherry. It was built with canals and check dams to store water for irrigation, covering a large basin that changes water levels depending on rainfall.
The reservoir was completed in 2014 and was one of the first man-made water projects in Karaikal district created specifically for agriculture. The Puducherry government built it as part of broader efforts to improve water supply for farmers in the region.
The lake bears the name of the village where it sits, reflecting the close tie between water and farming that defines this region. Local residents view it as a crucial resource, particularly during dry months when rainfall becomes scarce.
The lake is easy to reach from Thirunallar on the way toward Kumbakonam and sits right beside a main road. It is best visited during daylight hours, as roads around it are poorly maintained and there is no adequate lighting or safety monitoring.
The lake was originally planned as a tourist destination and equipped with an entrance arch and benches in 2014, but these facilities were never maintained and now lie in disrepair. In recent years, sand has been extracted from the lake for other government projects, making the site resemble a quarry more than a peaceful retreat.
