Margaret's Hope Tea Estate, Tea garden in Darjeeling district, India.
Margaret's Hope Tea Estate is a tea garden in the Kurseong region of West Bengal's Darjeeling district, spread across sloped terrain at multiple elevations. The property features processing facilities where visitors can observe how freshly picked leaves are transformed into finished tea.
The estate was founded in 1864 under the name Bara Ringtong and was renamed in the 1920s to honor Margaret, the daughter of its then-owner. A pivotal labor strike in 1955 resulted in significant improvements to working conditions across West Bengal's tea industry.
The estate remains a working community where families have maintained their connection to tea production across generations. Visitors encounter people who take pride in cultivating the bushes and sharing their knowledge with those passing through.
The estate welcomes visitors during daylight hours and offers a tasting pavilion where several tea varieties can be sampled. Wear sturdy shoes since the grounds are hilly and conditions can be muddy, especially during the rainy season.
Two rivers run through the property, creating natural water channels across the tea fields. These waterways support diverse wildlife, including salamanders and rare orchid species that flourish in the forests surrounding the planted slopes.
