Mashhad, Religious pilgrimage center in northeastern Iran
Located in the Kashaf River valley, Mashhad stands at 995 meters above sea level and extends over a vast urban area near Afghanistan and Turkmenistan borders.
The city changed its name from Sanabad to Mashhad in 818 CE after the burial of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam, transforming it into a major religious destination.
