Shrine of Venus Cloacina, Ancient temple in Roman Forum, Italy
The Shrine of Venus Cloacina consists of a circular marble base measuring 2.4 meters in diameter, positioned directly above the Cloaca Maxima sewer system.
The temple dates back to the early 600 BC when it was initially dedicated to Cloacina, the deity of the Roman sewer system, before its association with Venus.
Romans performed purification rituals at this shrine using myrtle branches, reflecting their connection between physical cleanliness and spiritual purity.
The shrine maintains its original location near the Basilica Aemilia, marked by a stone plaque in Italian and the circular marble ring at ground level.
Eight layers of stone support the temple structure above the Cloaca Maxima, added over time as the surrounding ground level rose through construction.
