Catacombs of San Sebastiano, Early Christian burial site along Via Appia Antica, Rome, Italy
The Catacombs of San Sebastiano feature three levels of underground galleries containing both pagan and Christian tombs carved into volcanic rock formations.
During the third century, the catacombs expanded to include the tombs of martyrs Sebastian and Eutichius, establishing its enduring religious significance.
The site contains numerous ancient graffiti invoking Saints Peter and Paul, demonstrating the early Christian practice of venerating apostles and martyrs.
Visitors can access the catacombs through ATAC buses 118, 218, or 660, with guided tours available daily except Thursdays from 09:30 to 17:00.
The complex includes a circular compartment called piazzola, originally an opencast mine, containing monumental tombs alongside graves for slaves and freedmen.
