Aqua Anio Vetus, Roman aqueduct in Porta Praenestina, Italy

The Anio Vetus aqueduct extends over 64 kilometers, featuring underground passages and strategic water distribution points across multiple regions of ancient Rome.

Construction began in 272 BC under censors Manius Curius Dentatus and Lucius Papirius Praetextatus, using funds from Rome's victory against Pyrrhus of Epirus.

The aqueduct supplied water to various districts of Rome, including the Forum Romanum and Circus Flaminius, supporting public fountains and industrial activities.

The structure maintains its original intake point at 260 meters above sea level near Vicovaro and Mandela, drawing water from the Anio River.

The aqueduct incorporated a specialized filtering system called piscina and the Specus Octavianus branch line to manage water distribution effectively.
