Aqua Julia, Roman aqueduct in Rome, Italy

The Aqua Julia extends for 22 kilometers through the Roman countryside, incorporating underground channels and elevated arches to transport water.

Constructed in 33 BC under Augustus supervision, the aqueduct marked the fifth water supply system of Rome during a period of infrastructure expansion.

The distribution network supplied water to multiple Roman districts including the Caelian, Forum Romanum, and Palatine through channels and siphons.

The aqueduct system delivered 48,000 cubic meters of water daily, with 65 percent allocated for public use and a portion for imperial estates.

The water source originated near Grottaferrata, where multiple springs converged in a catch basin before flowing through the Marciana Valley.

Inception: 33 BCE
