Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena

The Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena is a Baroque monastery in central Catania housing two cloisters, multiple gardens, and extensive halls across different levels. Wide staircases and corridors connect these areas, creating a complex network of interconnected spaces.

After Mount Etna's 1669 eruption, lava deposits significantly raised the ground level surrounding the monastery, prompting new construction of the building on this elevated foundation. This geological event fundamentally shaped how the monastery was rebuilt and organized.

The Department of Humanities at the University of Catania conducts teaching and research within these monastery halls, transforming the space into an active center for learning. Students and faculty members move through centuries-old rooms engaged in their daily studies and work.
