Temple of Janus, destroyed temple in the Roman Forum
The Temple of Janus was an ancient Roman shrine located in the Forum Boarium and dedicated to the god Janus. Only sparse remains of the structure survive today, offering traces of its former importance in daily Roman life.
The temple was built in antiquity to protect commerce and passageways. Its destruction followed the larger transformations Rome underwent in the centuries after the decline of the ancient empire.
The site is not accessible today and can only be viewed from the outside. It is wise to look carefully in the Forum Boarium area, as the remains are difficult to spot.
The god Janus gave the temple its name and symbolized transitions and new beginnings. This connection to trade routes made the shrine particularly meaningful to the Romans.
