The institution opened its doors in February 1953 through a ceremony conducted by Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi in the former San Vittore al Corpo monastery.

The museum contains numerous models based on Leonardo da Vinci's original drawings, illustrating the advancement of engineering and mechanical concepts through centuries.

Visitors can explore the museum from Tuesday to Friday between 09:30 and 17:30, with extended hours until 18:30 during weekends and public holidays.

The museum houses the Enrico Toti submarine and maintains the only Moon fragment available for public viewing in Italy.
