Santa Maria della Colonna, Naples, Baroque church in central Naples, Italy.
Santa Maria della Colonna is a Baroque church in central Naples with a Greek cross floor plan and a central dome. The interior displays detailed stucco work and wall paintings created by Paolo De Matteis, along with a choir area designed by Domenico Bertone.
The church began as an orphanage complex in 1580 and later transformed into a music school called Conservatori dei Poveri di Gesu. Its current Baroque facade was completed in 1715, giving the building the appearance it has maintained since then.
The building served as part of a music school complex where poor children learned to sing and play instruments, making it a place where faith and music education mixed together. Today, the interior still shows traces of this musical purpose through its carefully designed choir space.
The church has limited visiting hours, so checking ahead before your visit is helpful to ensure access. The location is centrally placed in Naples, making it easy to reach on foot, though it sits on a quieter street away from the busiest areas.
This church remained closed to the public for many years before reopening in 2018 following major restoration work supported by UNESCO funding. The renovation saved the intricate artworks inside from further damage and restored access to one of Naples hidden Baroque treasures.
