Santi Gioacchino e Anna ai Monti, Baroque church in Monti district, Rome, Italy
Santi Gioacchino e Anna ai Monti is a Baroque church built on a Greek cross plan with a central dome at its heart. Four Corinthian pilasters support the space while a barrel vault ceiling decorated with stucco cherubs completes the interior.
Work on the church began in 1589 and continued for nearly 200 years before Pope Pius VI consecrated it in 1781. This extended construction period reflects how the building evolved alongside Rome itself over two centuries.
The church is named after Saints Joachim and Anne, venerated as the parents of Mary. Religious artworks inside reflect this devotion and remain central to the community's prayer life today.
The church sits on Via Monte Polacco 5 in the Monti neighborhood and welcomes visitors during daylight hours. Regular services follow the Roman Catholic Rite, so check timing if you hope to attend Mass during your visit.
In 1774 workers discovered a hidden room behind the monastery choir containing silver artifacts and golden statues. This find revealed the building had deeper treasures and history than its outward appearance suggested.
