Refuge Jean-Antoine Carrel, Mountain hut at 3,825 meters in Valtournenche, Italy.
The Refuge Jean-Antoine Carrel is a mountain shelter at 3,825 meters on the south-west ridge of the Matterhorn with room for around 50 mountaineers. It sits directly along the Italian climbing route and serves climbers as an important resting point before their summit attempt.
The shelter was built in 1969 by the mountain guide association as an important milestone for developing the Italian route. Following major landslides in 2002 and 2003, extensive repairs were undertaken to ensure the safety of climbers using the route.
The shelter is named after a legendary mountain guide and draws climbers from around the world attempting the Italian route on the Matterhorn. This meeting place reflects the deep connection that forms between local guides and international mountaineers.
Access is through a four-hour walk from the neighboring hut across challenging terrain with fixed ropes and requires alpine experience. Good preparation and willingness to face harsh mountain conditions are necessary to complete this route safely.
Near the shelter stands a former museum building from 1905 that was later moved to the Italian Matterhorn guide company office. This structure tells the story of mountain guiding's long history in the region and the importance this place holds for the local climbing community.
