Rifugio Monzino is a mountain hut located at 2590 meters (8,500 ft) between the Fréney and Brouillard glaciers, providing accommodation and meals for climbers. The shelter has basic facilities with sleeping areas and a kitchen for guests preparing for challenging alpine routes.
The hut was established in 1965 and named after Franco Monzino, an Italian entrepreneur and climber. It became a base for numerous expeditions around Mont Blanc and neighboring high peaks.
The refuge serves as a gathering place for climbers from around the world preparing for difficult mountain routes and sharing experiences. Community here centers on mountaineering and the shared pursuit of high alpine objectives.
Access is via a three-hour hiking trail with marked paths starting from the Mountain Guide Office in Courmayeur. The route includes steep rocky sections requiring climbing gear, so visitors should be physically fit and have climbing experience.
The shelter sits on the edge of three major climbing routes: the Central Pillar of Fréney, the Aiguille Noire South ridge, and the Aiguille Croux South Face. This exceptional location makes it a preferred starting point for experienced alpinists wanting to combine multiple difficult routes within a few days.
