Little St Bernard Pass

Little St Bernard Pass, Mountain pass between Savoie and Aosta Valley, France-Italy border

Little St Bernard Pass is a mountain pass between Savoie and Aosta Valley on the France-Italy border. It connects Bourg-Saint-Maurice in France with Morgex in Italy and sits at an elevation of 2,188 meters.

The pass served as an important Alpine route in ancient times and was used by Romans for trade and travel. An 11th-century hospice later emerged at the site to shelter travelers crossing the mountains.

The stone circle at the summit, measuring 72 meters in diameter, reveals the presence of Iron Age ceremonies from the Tarentaisian civilization.

The mountain road is passable from May through October, with an ascent of about 26 kilometers from Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The climb follows a gradual slope, making it manageable for cautious drivers.

The summit holds remains of an ancient stone circle that hints at Iron Age ceremonies. These archaeological traces reveal how sacred this location was to earlier peoples.
