Palazzo Biscari

Palazzo Biscari, Baroque palace near Via Museo Biscari, Catania, Italy.

Palazzo Biscari is a Baroque palace in Catania featuring seven ornate second-story windows and a grand stone portal displaying the family coat of arms. The building extends along ancient city walls and contains multiple decorated rooms, including a ballroom with mirrors, frescoes, and a painted dome.

Following the 1693 Sicily earthquake, Prince Ignazio Paterno Castello commissioned reconstruction with architect Alonzo di Benedetto designing the original section. This rebuilding established the palace as a major structure in the city's landscape.

The palace served as the residence of the Biscari family and displays their wealth and status through lavish decorations throughout the rooms. Visitors can sense how the nobility lived and hosted important gatherings within these walls.

Visitors can explore the interior during guided tours, accessing rooms such as the Fief Room, Princess Apartments, and Birds Gallery. It is best to allow time to examine all chambers and their elaborate decorations carefully.

The palace features a double outdoor staircase in the inner courtyard leading to rooms with Rococo interiors and elaborate stucco work. This staircase design is an architectural detail that elegantly solves access to the different levels and areas of the building.
