Archi della Marina

Archi della Marina is a railway viaduct in Catania featuring 56 alternating gray and white arches built from volcanic rock and limestone. The structure connects multiple railway lines that carry both passengers and freight across the region.

The viaduct was constructed in the late 1800s to support the transport of sulfur and minerals across eastern Sicily. Its construction represented a significant step in modernizing the region's rail network.

The area beneath the arches is known locally as 'Stari sutta l'acca ra Marina', a name that reflects how deeply this structure is woven into the city's identity. People move through and under these spaces in their daily lives, and the arches shape how the neighborhood feels.

You can view the structure from street level, with various vantage points around the surrounding area offering different perspectives on the arches. Early morning provides the best lighting for seeing the gray and white details of the arches clearly.
