A village community of Franciscan friars settled here in the late 13th century, and the population grew to around 600 people by the 16th century. This religious presence shaped the organization and development of the settlement for several centuries.
The Lace Museum displays the Irish crochet tradition brought to the island in 1904 by Marchesa Guglielmi, who recruited instructors for local women. This craft still shapes the character of the place and remains part of daily life here.
Ferry boats run year-round connecting the island to towns around the lake, including Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Passignano sul Trasimeno, and Castiglione del Lago. Travel times are short, making it easy to visit as a day trip.
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo holds frescoes spanning from the 13th to 16th centuries and a crucifix thought to be by the artist Bartolomeo Caporali. These works of religious art are hidden treasures within the small village that many visitors overlook.
