San Giuseppe dei Ruffi, Naples, Baroque church in Naples Historic Center, Italy
San Giuseppe dei Ruffi is a baroque church in the Naples historic center, accessed by a distinctive double-staircase ramp leading to its main facade. The interior features marble decorations and a dome with frescoes by Francesco de Mura, both created by local craftsmen.
The church was founded in 1604 when noblewomen converted a palace into a monastery and chapel. Over the following century, successive architectural modifications shaped its baroque form and structure.
The church is dedicated to Saint Joseph and carries the Ruffo family name, visible in inscriptions throughout the interior. The space reflects how local craftsmanship was valued and displayed in religious settings during the baroque period.
The church sits along Via dell'Anticaglia in central Naples and is easily reached on foot from nearby attractions. Plan to visit during daytime hours when the door is open and the surrounding neighborhood is most active.
The church displays three separate domes built between 1699 and 1734 by different master builders, each showing different baroque approaches side by side. This visible layering of different artistic periods makes the interior a special place to understand baroque architectural evolution.
