Langkofelhütte, Mountain hut in Santa Cristina Gherdëina, Italy
Langkofelhütte is a mountain hut in the Dolomites, set in a wide rocky basin between Sassolungo and Plattkofel. It provides basic overnight accommodation and food for hikers and climbers passing through this part of the mountains.
The first hut was built in 1894 and was destroyed by an avalanche in 1903. It was rebuilt on the same spot and has welcomed mountain travelers ever since.
The hut takes its name from the Langkofel, the tall rock peak that rises just above it to the north. Inside, visitors often sit at long wooden tables next to other hikers and eat dishes like Schlutzkrapfen or Gulasch, as is common in South Tyrolean mountain huts.
Marked trails from Santa Cristina Gherdëina lead up to the hut, and solid hiking boots along with warm, waterproof layers are strongly recommended. Anyone planning to stay overnight should book a bed in advance, as space is limited.
The hut has kept guest books since 1894, and the oldest volume is now held at the Museo Val Gardena in Ortisei. More recent volumes remain in the hut itself, where visitors can leaf through handwritten notes left by travelers from past decades.
