Castelvecchio Bridge

The Castelvecchio Bridge spans 120 meters across the Adige River with three fortified arches and distinctive swallow-tail battlements along its walls.

Built between 1354 and 1356 under Cangrande II della Scala, the bridge served as an escape route from Castelvecchio fortress toward Tyrol during potential uprisings.

The bridge design combines red bricks and white stones, featuring a main arch of 48 meters that represented medieval Italian engineering capabilities.

Visitors can walk across this pedestrian bridge at any time, connecting the Castelvecchio Museum with the opposite bank of the Adige River.

German troops destroyed the bridge in 1945, but engineers reconstructed it using original stones retrieved from the riverbed, maintaining its medieval authenticity.
