Statue of Cangrande della Scala, Medieval marble equestrian statue in Castelvecchio Museum, Verona, Italy

The Statue of Cangrande della Scala is a marble sculpture depicting a mounted warrior in full armor and tournament dress. The work now stands protected indoors in a museum, where it is sheltered from weather conditions that once damaged it.

A sculptor created this work in the mid-1300s as part of a burial monument at a church in the city. Nearly 600 years later it was moved to a museum to preserve it for future generations.

The statue depicts a leader in tournament attire mounted on his horse, a form that expressed the power and valor of a warrior in that era. This type of representation was typical for important figures of the period and showed their role as protectors of the city.

The artwork is located in the indoor exhibition of the museum at ground level and is easily accessible. The statue is visible from all sides, allowing visitors to view it from different angles.

In the early 2000s scientists examined remains and discovered evidence of poison. This discovery changed how historians understand how this leader actually died.
