Rifugio Bagnour, Mountain hut in Pontechianale, Italy
Rifugio Bagnour is a mountain hut in the Cottian Alps situated at about 2000 meters elevation. It sits within one of Europe's largest stands of Swiss pine forest, creating a remote and quiet setting.
The refuge was built in 1941 as a forest guard base and later served during World War II as an observation point for military purposes. After the war, the building fell into disuse until recent restoration work brought it back into use.
The renovation project united the Comunità Montana Valle Varaita, European funds, and local managers to transform this former military outpost into a modern refuge.
The refuge offers beds in shared dormitories and a few double rooms, with meals available upon arrangement. Visitors should prepare for cold temperatures and changeable mountain weather since the hut sits in an exposed alpine setting.
The surrounding forest contains one of Europe's purest stands of Swiss pine trees, making it botanically remarkable. Nearby Lake Bagnour adds another layer to the setting and serves as a destination for hiking routes from the hut.
