Oratoire Preziosissimo Sangue, Neoclassical oratory in Monti district, Rome, Italy.
The Oratorio del Preziosissimo Sangue is a 19th-century church on Via di San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome's Monti district. Its facade bears the inscription "Redemisti nos Domine in sanguine tuo" beneath the tympanum. The interior is very simple, with a coffered ceiling and stained-glass windows that light the walls.
Built in the 19th century as the oratory of a house for poor girls, the building was adapted after 1860, when that house became a retirement home and hospital for elderly nuns. During the Second World War, part of the 136 Jews sheltered by the Congregation were hidden in the adjoining house of the Suore Adoratrici del Sangue di Cristo. The oratory is now a subsidiary place of worship of the parish of Santi Marcellino e Pietro al Laterano.
The name refers to the Precious Blood of Christ, a devotion the Adoratrici del Sangue di Cristo sisters keep alive; the oratory is their house chapel and a subsidiary place of worship for the parish of Santi Marcellino e Pietro al Laterano. The Latin inscription under the facade tympanum reads Redemisti nos Domine in sanguine tuo.
The chapel is located at Via di San Giovanni in Laterano 73 and is connected to the Santi Marcellino e Pietro al Laterano parish. Visitors should know that it functions as an active prayer space regularly used for liturgical purposes.
Part of the 136 Jews sheltered by the Congregation of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ were hidden in the adjoining convent house, not in the oratory itself. The interior is very plain; its coffered ceiling and stained-glass windows are the elements worth noting.
