San Giorgio alla Costa, Rococo church in Oltrarno, Italy

San Giorgio alla Costa sits on the Costa San Giorgio street, a pathway connecting Ponte Vecchio to Forte Belvedere. The interior displays Baroque features with ornate decoration and an altar that reflects the former prestige of this place.

The building originated before 1000 AD, but gained its present form through major renovation between 1705 and 1708. Architect Giovanni Battista Foggini directed this transformation and gave the place its Baroque appearance.

The church once housed a significant painting by Giotto that is now displayed elsewhere in the city. This artwork shows the artistic importance this location held over the centuries.

The location is reached via a clearly marked street that slopes upward from the river. Visitors should know that the roof has structural issues and repair work is ongoing, which may sometimes restrict access.

Three separate shrines originally stood at this site, each dedicated to different saints. This coexistence of multiple churches shows the complex religious history of this place during the medieval period.
