Sallustio Bandini founded the library in 1758 by donating his personal collection to the University of Siena, establishing a foundation for public access to knowledge. This donation marked the start of its role as an open institution serving the city.
The library displays manuscript collections from Santa Maria della Scala and houses illuminated manuscripts with Renaissance illustrations in its historic rooms. Visitors can observe these precious works and understand the artistic traditions connected to the city.
