Teatro dei Rozzi, Historic theatre in Siena, Italy
The Teatro dei Rozzi is a theatre house in Siena with three levels of balconies arranged in a horseshoe shape. The venue hosts theatrical performances, concerts, and conferences for around 500 guests.
The Congrega dei Rozzi, founded in 1531 by twelve artisans, was transformed into an academy in 1690 and built its own theatre in 1815 to Alessandro Doveri's design; the hall opened in 1817 with Ferdinando Paer's L'Agnese di Fitzenry. Augusto Corbi remodelled it in 1873, and it stayed active until 1945, when war damage closed it. Restoration, begun in the 1970s and resumed in 1985 under architect Massimo Bianchini, was completed in 1998.
The Accademia dei Rozzi, founded in 1531 by twelve artisans, took the cork tree as its emblem and was nicknamed the Academy of the Uncouth for avoiding Latin texts. Its members staged satirical comedies by Girolamo Gigli and character comedies by Jacopo Angelo Nelli. The academy still keeps a library and archive of its past works.
The theatre is located at Piazza Indipendenza in the city centre. Visitors should check ahead for current events and plan their route to the venue.
In 2017, a special banner was created to mark the theatre's 200th anniversary, designed by artist Laura Brocchi. This work shows how the building remains connected to the city's cultural life today.
