Castle in Forza d'Agrò

The castle in Forza d'Agrò is a fortress positioned on a hilltop at 420 meters elevation, commanding views of the eastern Sicilian coastline. The surrounding mountain landscape extends across the horizon from this vantage point.

Norman rulers built this fortress in the 12th century on foundations of earlier Greek or Roman fortifications. It formed part of a defensive network protecting the coastal region from attacks.

The castle grounds served as a cemetery from 1876 to 1989, showing how historical buildings in Sicily took on different roles over time. This transformation shaped how locals understood their past and how the building connected to community life.

Access to the castle is currently restricted, though you can reach the site via Via Castello 16 in central Forza d'Agrò. The steep paths leading uphill require sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness.

A small watchtower on a separate rock formation allowed distant monitoring of Sant'Alessio Castle. This isolated outpost was part of a sophisticated Norman surveillance system that stretched along the coast.
