Carbonana Castle

Carbonana Castle is a fortress situated on a strategic hilltop between Gubbio and Umbertide with sweeping views across the valley below. From its elevated position along a major historic route, the structure commands extensive views of the surrounding landscape.

The fortress was first documented in 1192 when Pope Celestine III granted it to the Bishop of Gubbio. The title of Count of Carbonana originated in the 10th century and has persisted through the centuries.

The Gabrielli family controlled the fortress for generations and shaped the region's political landscape. Visitors can sense this noble legacy in the castle's layout and surviving details.

The castle sits along State Road 219 and is visible from various approach points, making it relatively straightforward to locate and reach. A comprehensive restoration completed in 2014 has stabilized the structure and improved overall accessibility.

The County of Carbonana was established in the 10th century and remains officially recognized today, with the title transferring to whoever owns the castle. This continuous acknowledgment of a medieval title is rare and underscores the lasting historical weight of this location.
