Carbonana Castle, Medieval castle in Gubbio, Italy.

The fortress stands on a strategic promontory along state road 219, connecting Gubbio to Umbertide with a commanding view of the valley.

Pope Celestine III granted the castle to Bishop Bentivoglio of Gubbio in 1192, marking its first documented appearance in historical records.

The initial lords of the castle belonged to the Gabrielli family, whose member Cante Gabrielli was responsible for exiling the poet Dante Alighieri.

The castle underwent a complete restoration in 2014 under the supervision of Umbria's Architectural and Landscape Heritage Office.

The title of Count of Carbonana, established in 900, remains recognized today and transfers to the castle's owners.
