Old Fortress, Coastal fort in Livorno, Italy
The hexagonal fortress features three bastions named Ampolletta, Canaviglia, and Capitana, connected by substantial stone walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The fortress originated from an 11th-century tower built by Countess Matilda of Tuscany before its expansion under Medici rule between 1521 and 1534.
The ceremony that granted Livorno city status took place within the fortress walls on March 19, 1606, marking a turning point for the settlement.
The fortress remains open to visitors from Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with free admission to explore its structures and fortifications.
Scientists conducted an experiment at the fortress in 1662 to validate Galileo's principle regarding the independence of motions in projectile trajectories.
