Galleria Comunale d'Arte is an art museum in Giardini Pubblici and houses more than 3000 works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection includes sculptures, paintings, and graphic works that display the artistic diversity of this era.
The building began as the powder magazine of the Savoy arsenal, built in the late 18th century; its neoclassical facade was added in 1828 by Carlo Boyl di Putifigari. After military use ended in the late 19th century the municipality acquired it, and Ubaldo Badas remodelled it in the early 1930s. A February 1933 decree by podestà Enrico Endrich created the civic gallery, funded with 270,000 lire, making it Sardinia's first civic museum.
The gallery displays works by Italian masters such as Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, and Giorgio de Chirico, documenting the nation's artistic development. These pieces allow visitors to experience the different styles and movements that shaped Italian modern art.
The museum offers wheelchair accessibility throughout all areas and maintains regular opening hours for visitors. The well-organized galleries make it easy to explore the collection at a comfortable pace.
The gallery's first core collection came from regional fine arts exhibitions in the 1930s. In June 1939 it acquired seven original plaster works by Francesco Ciusa, including La madre dell'ucciso (1907), plus the bronze Bontà; a whole room is devoted to him. The Pietà was added in 1995.
