Iglesia de San Efisio

The iglesia de San Efisio is a Baroque church in the Stampace district featuring a rectangular floor plan with three side chapels and an eight-sided dome positioned above the altar area. The front elevation displays Ionic pilasters as its main architectural element.

Construction took place between 1726 and 1782, replacing an older structure that had stood on this site. The building was positioned above a limestone cave where Saint Efisio is said to have been held captive before his death.

The church houses a statue of Saint Efisio that plays a central role in local religious observance each year. This figure draws pilgrims and residents together for one of the region's most important celebrations of faith.

The underground cave chamber beneath the church floor is currently closed to visitors while undergoing conversion into a museum space. It is helpful to check ahead about any special guided tours or access opportunities that may be available.

The main altar from 1786 was created by Giovanni Battista Franco and features precious marble work characteristic of the late Baroque period. This carefully crafted altar decoration showcases the artistic investment made in this devotional space.
