Chiesa di Santa Chiara

The Chiesa di Santa Chiara is a Baroque church in the Stampace district, characterized by a double-curved crown on its facade and a portal decorated with a small niche and rectangular openings. The interior is defined by columns and structural elements that shape the character of the building, which also includes an attached monastery.

The church was founded in the late 13th and early 14th centuries as a monastery for Clare nuns and was originally dedicated to Saint Margaret. Over time, it acquired its present Baroque form and remained an important religious site in Cagliari.

The interior displays religious artworks from the Baroque period, including a gilded wooden altarpiece in the altar area that reflects the style of Sardinian churches from that era. The furnishings and decoration tell of artistic traditions from the 17th century on the island.

An underground crypt beneath the nave was discovered in the 1980s and contains foundation remains of the medieval predecessor building. This archaeological layer offers insight into the site's early phases, long before the Baroque church was constructed.
