Teatro Civico di Castello, Neoclassical theatre in Castello district, Cagliari, Italy.
Teatro Civico di Castello is a neoclassical theatre in the Castello district distinguished by cornices and tympanized windows on its exterior walls. It sits beside the historic Palazzo Boyl and today holds around 178 spectators in its performance space.
The theatre was commissioned by Marquis Zapata in the 1760s and rebuilt in 1831 by architects Giuseppe Cominotti and Gaetano Cima. A bombing in 1943 destroyed its interior, leaving only the exterior walls intact.
Before World War II, this venue hosted opera seasons and ballet performances as Cagliari's main cultural center. Its location in the old town still reflects its historical importance to city life.
The theatre is centrally located in the old town, making it easy to explore the surrounding area. Visiting fits well with a walk through Castello to see other historic buildings nearby.
After wartime destruction, the building was rebuilt without a roof covering the main hall, creating an unusual open structure that remains today. This distinctive feature resulted from restoration work finished in 2006 that transformed the ruins into a working venue.
