Palazzo dell'Università, Palace in Castello district of Cagliari, Italy
Palazzo dell'Università is a palace in Cagliari's Castello district featuring three floors with symmetrical windows and two grand entrances framed by distinctive architectural details and pilasters. The building houses the university rectorate, a ceremonial assembly hall, and a substantial library.
The palace was constructed between 1761 and 1769 by military engineer Saverio Belgrano di Famolasco as part of a university reform initiated under Carlo Emanuele III. This project significantly shaped the region's academic infrastructure.
Four bronze statues in the rector's hall represent Philosophy, Law, Medicine, and Science, reflecting the core academic fields. These figures remind visitors of the scholarly values that have shaped this institution since its founding.
The palace sits centrally in Cagliari's oldest district and is easily reached on foot when exploring the old town. Most areas are accessible to visitors, though some rooms are open only at specific times during the week.
The main hall displays two large paintings by Filippo Figari that fill the interior with artistic richness. Hanging alongside these works are the university's official gonfalon and a relief honoring the monarch who established the institution.
