Tour de l'Aigle, Medieval tower in Castello district, Cagliari, Italy

Torre dell'Aquila is a defensive tower in the Castello district with limestone walls and wooden galleries on its eastern side that reflect Pisan design. The structure was originally taller but lost its upper portion due to historical bombardments.

Giovanni Capula built this defensive structure in 1307 during Pisan rule over Sardinia. Later, the tower suffered damage to its upper section during attacks by English, Spanish, and French naval forces.

The tower takes its name from the eagle emblem of the city, which appears carved into the stone near the lower entrance. These symbols show how the community expressed its identity and authority through this structure.

The tower is accessible through Via Mario de Candia 8 in the Castello district and serves as one of the quarter's entrance points. Visitors should note that steep paths and narrow streets in the district may make exploration challenging.

The tower's entrance system is remarkably complex with three thick doors and two grates arranged in sequence. These security measures show how seriously the defense of the structure was taken, and elevated shelves along the walls allowed for the placement of movable wooden structures for additional protection.
