Palazzo di Città

Palazzo di Città is a restored medieval structure at the highest point of Cagliari's historic center that displays contemporary artworks across multiple floors. The palace combines historical architecture with modern exhibition spaces, allowing visitors to experience art within a context of ancient stonework.

The building began in 1400 as Cagliari's town hall and served this role until 1907, when municipal operations moved to different locations. The shift from practical administrative use to art institution reflects changes in city priorities across several centuries.

The building hosts rotating exhibitions featuring works by Sardinian artists and international photographers, connecting local artistic voices with global perspectives. Visitors encounter different artistic expressions that bring together island and world viewpoints.

The museum is accessed through stairs and elevators within the complex, providing access to the various exhibition levels. Allow time for the climb to the highest point, since the location in Cagliari's old town means foot access runs over cobbled paths.

The basement level contains contemporary art installations that intentionally contrast with the medieval architecture of the upper floors. This deliberate contrast creates tension between old structure and new artistic vision that shapes the visitor experience.
