Park of Montagnola, Urban park in San Vitale district, Bologna, Italy.
The Park of Montagnola is a green space spanning approximately 6 hectares with winding paths, mature plane trees, and decorative features including statues and fountains scattered throughout. A distinctive staircase known as the Pincio leads visitors between different levels of the grounds.
The park was first established in 1664 as a municipal green space for Bologna. Its current layout and design took shape around 1808 when architect Giovan Battista Martinetti redesigned it during the Napoleonic period.
The market held here on Fridays and Saturdays brings together locals and visitors looking for vintage goods, handmade items, and traditional products. This weekly gathering has become a social hub where the community gathers to shop and connect.
The park is open daily at no charge, with benches and picnic areas throughout for visitors to enjoy. The layout makes it easy to explore, thanks to clear pathways and seating distributed across the grounds.
The park rests on an artificial plateau built from rubble of the 14th-century Galliera Castle, originally constructed as a papal residence. This hidden history lies literally beneath visitors' feet as they walk through the grounds.
