The Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù has a 60-metre dome and a facing in exposed brick bearing the inscription DIVINO CORDI IESU REDEMPTORIS and a mosaic of Jesus pointing to his heart. Inside is a single large nave with four votive chapels near the entrance: the Holy Family and St John Bosco on the left, the Transit of St Joseph and the Madonna and Child with Saints on the right. The apse frescoes are by Domenico Ferri and Antonio Mosca, and 134 windows by Antonio Maria Nardi show saints.

Construction began in 1901 under Cardinal Domenico Svampa's leadership, following Edoardo Collamarini's design, and was completed in 1912. A dome collapse occurred in 1929, but the building was reconstructed following the original plans rather than being replaced.

The name refers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to which the church is dedicated. The facade carries the Latin inscription DIVINO CORDI IESU REDEMPTORIS and a mosaic of Jesus pointing to his heart. The Salesians of Don Bosco still run the parish and the schools behind it, and one side chapel is dedicated to their founder, San Giovanni Bosco.

The church is located just outside Porta Galliera along Via Matteotti in the Navile district, making it easy to find. As it serves an active parish community, visiting times may vary depending on scheduled services.

The church has no bell tower: its six bells, cast in 1938 by the Bolognese founder Cesare Brighenti, hang in the arches of a buttress at the base of the dome on the Via Jacopo della Quercia side. They are fixed and struck by external electric hammers, imitating the "doppio bolognese" and other traditional peals.
