Il Golgo, Natural monument in Baunei, Italy
Il Golgo is a limestone chasm located in Baunei that drops about 270 meters straight down with an opening roughly 25 meters wide at the top expanding to about 40 meters at the bottom. The rocky walls display the rough texture of karst formations carved by water seeping through the rock over thousands of years.
Early mapmakers thought this was an ancient volcanic crater, but cavers in 1957 revealed it was actually shaped by limestone being worn away by water over millions of years. This finding changed how scientists understood the geology of this part of Sardinia.
The small San Pietro church stands near the chasm, and local traditions speak of a legendary creature said to dwell in its depths. This simple chapel reflects how people have always tried to understand and make sense of such dramatic natural features.
The visit requires sturdy shoes and attention, as the paths are steep and rocks can be slippery, especially when wet. Stay on marked trails and keep distance from the edges, since there are no barriers or safety railings.
The chasm is home to specialized creatures like the Sardinian cave salamander and rare spider species that thrive only in hidden underground pockets. This hidden world remains invisible to most visitors, yet it forms a complete ecosystem adapted to the darkness and dampness.
